About

About Frog Lake Cree Nation

Frog Lake Cree Nation is a Plains Cree Treaty 6 Nation in east-central Alberta, working to keep its culture, language and Treaty Rights strong for future generations.

Frog Lake Cree Nation, known in Cree as ᐊᔨᑭᓵᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ (ayiki-sâkahikan), is a Plains Cree community in Alberta. In the federal registry it is listed as Frog Lake, band number 465. Most members are Plains Cree people who speak the Cree "Y" dialect. The Nation is part of Tribal Chiefs Ventures Inc.

The Nation's history goes back to Treaty 6. On September 9, 1876, Chief Tus-tak-see-kwaise signed the treaty for the Unipouheos Band, and the Puskiakiwenin Band adhered in 1878. The two bands joined to form Frog Lake First Nation in 1914. Today the Nation holds two reserves and shares a third, for a land base of about 189 square kilometres:

  • Puskiakiwenin 122
  • Unipouheos 121
  • Blue Quills (shared)

Culture and language are central to community life. Leadership has said it wants to keep Treaty Rights so that the next generation will keep a strong culture and language. In September 2026, a powwow brought dancers from across Canada and the United States to Frog Lake to celebrate 150 years of Treaty Six. At a local high school, students are using an app they built themselves to learn Cree.

Chief and Council deliver a wide range of services, including Employment and Training, Daycare, Education, Economic Development, Finance, Health, Housing, Human Services, Post-secondary, Public Works and Youth programs. Community businesses include Frog Lake Energy Resources Corporation, which explores for and develops oil and gas resources. Learn more at the official Frog Lake website.
